So week 3 has come and gone.....

So week 3 has come and gone. The objective game was a blast and the Cadian army comes home victorious after completely wiping out the Heretical Blood Angels! The sledgehammer of the emperor had defeated the dull traitorous blade.

Anyways, it was pretty fun. I got to see how dangerous the Furioso Dreadnaught is. That magno-grapple is pretty cool. The ability to do a strength 8 + D6 hit and then pull it closer is pretty awesome especially on rear armor.

I also got to use some tactics I had never used before such as the flat out scout move that the Valkyries are capable of which let me take out a squad of devastators (by running them off the board). By the end of my turn I was able to completely wipe my opponents figures off the board by turn 1 (not including the units in reserve).

On his turn, my oppenent was able to drop pod his Furioso down who was able to take out my Vendetta, but that was not really a loss as it left only infantry to come in later. On my next turn, the drop pod and the Furioso were taken out clearing the table of the enemy yet again (but not for long).

The next turn, the Librarian with his honor guard along with two 5 man teams of scouts came in. This is where the stuff hit the fan and several squads of infantry along with a heavy weapons squad got taken out, but this took place over several turns.

In the end, the Blood Angels were soundly defeated and all the objectives secured from the traitors to the emperor.

New Valkyrie

So here is the new Valkyrie that I bought. I assembled and painted (tabletop - basecoat + 2 other colors) and this is the finished project. I decided to try something new and painted wings on the wings of the plane. It was interesting to say the least :)

Lol, so week 2's game is today. Gonna play it at 3pm. Not much different about this army other than I am still playing the same base army (Infantry Platoon w/1 command squad w/chimera, 5 infantry squads, and one heavy weapons squad) but I am also adding 1 squad of veterans and the Valkyrie :) Its gonna be fun :)

Week 1 EITMC

So week 1 of the Escalation in the Man Cave is over and I'm happy to say that I won both games. For the first round I played a company command squad with a chimera, and an infantry platoon with the platoon command squad, 5 squads of GMen, and a Lascannon Heavy Weapons Squad.

The first game was just a win (due to some shrewed generalmanship from a crafty Chaos Space Marine player as I was able to kill all of his figures except one thus denying me a massacre.

The second match I played a BA player. Remembering that the player could outflank and deepstrike, I decided to take up my whole deployment zone spreading out my troops to avoid the outflank behind my figures. This proved to be the key to my victory here. This strategy forced the BA General to outflank in front of my GMen and the deepstrikers dropped within range as well. Due to some fortunate rolls I was able to score a massacre.

Anyway, the games were great and everyone is having a great time.

Until EITMC. I'm looking forward to it. I think we have the rules locked down and all of my figures are painted (all figures put together that is. I still have about 13 figures left to put together but I am painting them as I go). I think the remaining figures are going to be primarily replacement figures (such as melta, plasma, and flamer weaponry so that I can start fielding some special weapons squads.

So I am almost ready for the Escalation in the Man Cave. I have one little secret that I haven't told anyone yet, but beyond that, I think I now have a balanced list of anti-vehicle and anti-infantry. I just have to fine tune it one last time before I actually play.

So I am trying a new painting technique for the weapons on my IG. I am going to paint them in Boltmetal (right now it is chainmail) and then paint it in Babad Black to give it a black hammered metal look. I will post some pics eventually (prob after the first game of the Escalation), but I think it looks good.

So I am at the point where my army is pretty solid with regard to what is put together. I have a few more guardsman (maybe a units worth plus I could create a few G-men with weapons other than lasguns) that I could put together. I have a full infantry platoon not including the special weapons team and the conscripts and a veteran squad worth of figures. I've got 3 Leman Russ tanks and a Valkyrie.

Anyhow, I think I am going to try and start buying some Chimeras. I think I am going to try and form up a Melta/Plasma vet squad in the future just to see how well it does. I am not sure how soon I can get it, but I think I am going to pick up at least one Chimera and possibly proxy the bodies of Leman Russes or a friends Rhino and run the squad. Anyways, so thats what is next. I was looking at some Battle Psychers, but I think I am a little weak on low point armor at this point.

So I've been painting some terrain pieces and here are the pictures. This has actually been rather fun to paint. These are the terrain pieces from the Battle for Macrag. My son says they are part of a Space Marines ship, but they look close to the Valkyries that the IG has. So the first picture is the piece of terrain that is based but not detailed. The second and third picture is completely finished terrain piece, and the 4th and 5th are the nose piece detailed but not washed in devlin mud, although I have a little more detailing to do. These have been fun.

So I just got done organizing my 40 stuff... I went from a massive box down to 2 battleforce sized boxes and my tackle box that holds my IG, although most of the battleforce sized boxes are just bitz leftover. I will prob give the 'nid bitz to Tinbitz so he can do whatever he does with bits to make awesome objectives and other things, but I will keep the IG stuff for my army. I'm just happy to have everything organized.

I dont have one Leman Russ painted, but I had to part it out for one of the other Russ tanks. Anyways, I am going to take it over to Kr1ch's house tomorrow and get a picture up with the whole army assembled :)

Just a late addition of something I added to my tanks. I added the gold Imperial symbol on one tank, and the antenna array on the other tank so that one could be a "command" tank and the other a subordinate... Not necessarily as a squadron, but I thought it looked cool. Let me know what you think! :)

Lol, so I am 99% escalation ready. I have to paint the tracks on my Russ (I am out of Chaos Black and hoping Tinbitz will loan me some of his) and base my g-men, but other than that I am good to go. Got the Russ painted, and I must say, I am pretty impressed with it myself considering my painting ability... lol... I'll post pictures later after dinner. It feels good to almost be done painting figures in your army.

So I only have one more tank to detail paint (and possibly paint the turret) along with basing 20 g-men and then I will have everything done for the escalation event we are going to do. 1500 points table top ready. go me!

So in the 2 hours or so that I was watching Without a Paddle, I was able to paint 10 guys... When I get home tonight I look forward to basing them. That will give me 50 total g-men.... Cant wait.. only 10 more to go then I can finish basing my Leman Russ and the Sentinels and then my army will be 100% tabletop painted..... woo hoo!! time to buy more vehicles... lol, but that prob wont be done until after I graduate (as a present to myself!).

So, its been a fairly busy night. I got 1 squad of lascannons painted and 1 squad of guardsmen completely painted (tabletop quality, nothing too professional) and based. Really excited for this. I also ripped 2 squads of guardsmen off to re-base along with my mortar team. Lookin good. I need 2 more squads of g-men to get my army ready for the 1500 point (it was lowered) escalation tournament that we are going to be trying out, along with 2 leman russ battle tanks touched up (some silver and black added to them to finish them off). Cant wait to finally have everything pretty much table top painted!! woo hoo!

Ok, so we had a discussion at the last game as to whether or not platoons are considered one large troop choice or if they are seperate choices (with the exception of combined infantry squads which are considered one squad). The discussion came up and one of the figures stated that the amount of lascannons that could be fielded would be overpowered(although not point effective). We finally all agreed that they are seperate units due to the combined infantry rule. So just for fun, I decided to see just how many lascannons I could field regardless of cost, although I did not upgrade the units beyond lascannons. So, for 8345 points, the Imperial Guard can field 164 Lascannons. Now thats a crapload of lascannons!

Edit: BTW, other than the base, I do have to detail the coat, and I was thinking of leaving the underside of th coat black as I am not sure how to paint the underside. I really think it adds (?) to the color and mystery of the figure. I actually made my first "wash" with this character and painted it over his head to make it look really pale.... Whats funny is I accidently put some chainmail that was left on the brush in the white that gave it the pale while/grey/blue color a little :)

New figure on the way

So I will prob not be able to buy the battleforces that I wanted to this month due to medical issues that came up last week, but I was able to buy a pot of paint (glimmering gold) and some wash (devlan mud, man I love this stuff). I also ordered a new figure and I will be excited to actually get to play him. I just ordered the Primaris Psycher who is pretty bad ass 2d6 assault psychic power and a force weapon he is pretty cheap at 70 points. I cant wait to actually play him. I got to proxy him in a game against the orks. We played 2 games with him, one of which I won. I won the first game by KP at the end of the turns, but after playing it out, my opponent wiped me off the table. In the second game, my opponent won by kill points but I wiped him off the table, so either way we both won a game... lol... Anyways, I think this is the first HQ figure I am actually going to paint myself other than the command squad. I have had one of my buddies painting my HQs that that I have so far (Tech Priest and Yarrick), but this one looks pretty cool so I think I'll do it myself. I'll still have him paint Creed and Kell only because these guys are supposed to be bad ass in the IG army, and I don't want to paint them so they look crappy and unintimidating... lol

AU Tournament

Ok, so we did better than I thought we would do. We won for about 5-10 minutes, but only because of an excel issue where somehow our points were not being tallied correctly. The first game would have been a tie, except I was a moron and did not have my guys on our own objective and so the other team won. Lesson learned! The second game, we massacred (not my word) our opponents thanks to my partners quick thinking (and some awesome dice rolls on his part) and ability to outflank. The third game was going fairly well until our dice rolls ran out. Hopefully we can start playing some one on one games. I would not mind playing against Guy one on one for something like 1k points using sistas and my IG or even IG buy proxying some thing such as some hellhounds (or variants) or even proxying my russes to other variants such as the punisher cannon. I would have loved to use that at the AU tournament and see people poop their britches... lol I may end up creating an army with one of those variants but remove the Valk and have a walker as I just got that assembled and base painted but not detail painted.

I guess they could be played either way, but I think I'm going to start color coordinating my platoons. I will have the Comany Command Squad be the generic color of the army (Green and Beige) and the Platoon Command Squads each be a different color with regards to their armor colors. For example, this first commander has black, so Iwill see how it works out in future figures, but for now I think he looks like a BAMF. Anyways, here are the pics... Oh, and I did by some Tallaran Flesh (or however you spell it) Enjoy the pics. I really like how his hair turned out... Not sure if you can see it in that first picture though....

My new Cadian battleforces came in tonight!! WOO HOO!!!! I got 2 of the battleforces in, and I will order a 3rd come either the middle or end of October. I only needed one figure to finish out my army for the Adventures Underground tournament. I've made an interesting decision with regards to my Infantry Platoon Commanders. I think I am going to make the armor pieces, boots, glasses, and other accent pieces different colors. So this platoon commender is black for this one and I got him painted, but not glued together yet. one I get him glued together I need to base him and then wash him in Devlan Mud. I'll post some pics of him tommorow.

Well, I said that I emailed GW a little over a week ago. I believe I emailed them on Sunday on Labor Day weekend. I have yet to receive a reply from them and I do have to say it is a little frustrating. I understand that Monday was a holiday and that 3 business days should have been Friday (giving them some lead time just to be save), but here it is almost a week later (business days, its well over a week counting days normally, but as I work in retail I actually understand what business days are) and I have heard nothing. I guess I better start prepping my contingency list.... Oh well.. I gain 1 extra order a turn I guess and I lose my stubber on the Russ... Just can't use my Tech Priest.... So sad...

So I know this blog is about IG, but I must be honest. If I havent mentioned it already, I actually own about 1k-1.5k (not sure exact amount) of Tyranid, and I belive a little over 1k in Witch Hunters/Sisters of Battle. So I played one battle with the 'nids and got crushed... The orks got some lucky rolls and wiped out my genestealers, but I won with the Sisters, which made me extremely happy. I am hoping once I get these battle forces in that I can play with them along side the IG... I think that could be fun, especially with the Cannoness in a 50 man Infantry Squad, but I will let that strategy be my little secret... This tactic reeks of tactical genius.....

So I just found this website and it made me reflect a little on the way I play the game.... While I have not actually read the site... I think that I can guess it content.... I know that I can be somewhat of a rules lawyer, but I think my friends would call me more of a rules Nazi with how much I read rules and love to follow them... I think the difference between a rule Nazi and a rule lawyer is that the lawyer will try and twist the rules to his benifit where the Nazi is actually VERY strict about following the rules to the point that he/she looks them up constantly (guilty). Although I have not been right on every rule that I have spouted, there are a few that I have been right on which makes me feel good, but at the same time I feel it has alienated my friends from me, so I think that while I will still research rules (I think that is an OCD (not offically) thing with me), I will try and be more lax with the way that I present them to my friends.... While rules are important, I feel that they have started ruining the game for not only me, but my friends as well... In the end I must remember that it is only a game.... Goosfraba!! lol

Edit: By the way, I found in the previous codex where it states that the platoon command squad was 2 kill points. I really want to discuss (not like last week) with h00t how this affects things in terms of kill points for our group and for the tournament. But I think its very interesting now that I've found it. I guess I was just too tired to find it last time when I wanted to compare them. Again, not as a rule Nazi, but just as a discussion with h00t (and anyone else from our group who wants to discuss). One more thing. I think my problem with arguing, which we discussed in my health/pe education is that I, like others become agressively argumentative when it comes to competition. Now that I know this, I am hoping that I can avoid it in the future as my friendships are more important to me that winning a game or an arguement.

Army list pretty much nailed down and an email to GW

So my buddy and I have our army list pretty much nailed down with regards to the tournament at Adventures Underground. We went from losing with large difference between kill points (I think one game it was like 7-2, a complete route) to losing by one or two points (one game was 4-5 and I think the other was 3-4). In reality, losing by one or two points can be attributed to bad rolls. As an example, I fired with everything from my Valkyrie at a pathfinder squad (I will admit they were in cover). I fired 2 pie plates (large blast), 6 shots from the sponson heavy bolters, and 3 from the multi laser. One would think that I would have at least killed one. I did learn that circling with my Valkyrie is the best way to keep it alive, so I think that is what I am going to do in the tournament. Some make call it cheese, but I think the idea of circling with the Valkyrie to stay alive is as valid as camping in the back with snipers. Just because a player cannot get into range w/o taking a load of shots does not make it a less valid tactic than camping in the back, its just playing to the weakness of another player.

On a side note, I just sent an email out to GW concerning IG Command Squads being worth 2 kill points in a FAQ located here and to see if I could take my Tech-Priest as my only HQ due to a ruling concerning the black templar FAQ here. The website states that the email should come back within 3 business days and I will post the answers here. This does not mean that they will be accepted by the tournament organizer, but I am sure my friends would trust me enough to allow its use in our friendly games.

Couple new army lists for the tournament

So I came up with a 2 new lists for the tournament, just in case that I was not able to to use my tech priest as my HQ as it does not take up a FOC slot. My argument hinges on the black templar faq stating that "...even though he does not take up an HQ slot, he is still and HQ choice and so he fullfils the minimum HQ requirement." So in the new armies I have taken veterans and a company command squad instead meaning that I can issue 2 orders 12" away. The only thing I really lose is the ability to repair my vehicles, not an overall bad thing, but we will see. I dont think I'm going to play test them only because I have an arguement on my side that allows them, but I will have them ready just in case.

Throw out your old FAQs here comes a new one :) None of these rules I have violated so its not that big of a deal. I'm glad they threw out the old one as it had no bearing on the current codex as a majority of the information was taken out (such as some of the doctrines, there are some for veterans, but as far as I know, none of the doctrines are the same from the last edition codex to this edition codex).

Edit: There are some interesting points on Dakka Dakka such as there are 3 access points on the Valkyries. One on the rear and two on the sides. This means that the hull of the Valkyrie are where the doors open on the side and at the rear and do not extend to the wings or the back tail. Fairly interesting as that means that templates that hit the wing would either be glancing or misses as they are not part of the hull. Quite interesting indeed....

Apparently they changed the ruleset inbetween rounds. While I dont play orks, I was curious how the deffrollas (I think thats what they are called) would work against vehicles and found it kinda cool that they ruled that they could attack vehicles with them. Its a little suprising that after the last round that they would change the rules so that they cannot now. I wonder if this will change before the tournament....

So I was goofing off with the new armybuilder update for 40k to see if it was now worth buying as the last version did not have correct information for IG. When I was building my tournament army on it, I noticed that the Valkyrie gets TWO rocket pods. Quickly I verified this with the Codex for Imperial Guard and I realized that I have only been playing with one rocket pod thinking that they were both firing at the same time to give the big blast template but it actually states in the codex that the valkyrie exchanges the two missles for two multiple rocket pods which means not only does it get to fire 2 big blast templates along with 6 shots from the sponson bolters and the 3 from the multi laser, but also that it now has 5 weapons to destroy for weapon destroyed instead of 4. This could be fun.....

So I've started painting 5 of my guardsmen to replace 4 from the command squads (Flag Bearer and first aid kit come to mind), and one vox caster from the normal unit as when blobbing guys up, only one vox caster is needed and other than a Vindicare Assassin (Witch Hunters) and Tellion (Space Marines), I am unsure as to if any other figure, with the exception of a big mek on a roll of double six can take out a specific unit. I dont know that I am going to have time to post the painted figures as I paint them due to College starting back up and me doing this just for fun, but I post them when they are done. Especially considering that I spray primed them with the olive green spray by Krylon. I will also post pictures so that you can see them side by side for color references as the Krylon is a different color on vehicles than the Catachan Green. I am guessing it is noticeable due to the large surface area, but we will see.

Difference in color

So here is the difference between the 2 colors. The body of the tank is the Camo Green color that Krylon puts out in a flat black. The other color is the Olive Green that Krylon puts out as well While the close up picture of the top of the tank does not do as well as portraying how close the colors are as the further away shot, but I think I will use the olive green.

Ok, so here is the Valkyrie and the Russ side by side so you can see the color (or colour as GW puts it... lol). You can see that the Valkyrie has more green and less olive than the Russ has, but I am not sure that it may make that much of a difference. I may go ahead and spray the olive over the camo to try and keep them all close to the same color....

So here is the beginning pictures of my Leman Russ. I am not sure if I like the green color or not. This was an experiment with spray paint trying to come up with a spray that is tough enough for warhammer but still close to the same color as the Catachan Green. Anyways, I think the coats went on fairly well for this type of paint and the detail on the model is still very visible. Again, this is just a spray as I am too lazy to hand paint a base coat on a vehicle after my valkyrie... lol

So I just picked up 20 more guards for my army. I am going to break them up into 5 guys that will have normal lasguns (for sure) 5 guys that have rare earth magnets for special weapons, and then a a squad of 10 guys. I will take pictures of the painting process and post them when I finish the 5 guys of how I paint my guys on the Sprue. I also picked up some Olive Green Krylon for my Leman Russ along with a Camo Green by Krylon so I can see how that looks as well. I will make sure to post pics of the Russ as it progresses too.

Ordered my Tech Priest

So like the post title says, I have ordered my Tech Priest. Can't wait for it to get here :) Unfortunately it was something only orderable from Games Workshop so I know I over paid for it, but whatcha gonna do? Oh well... One step down, 4 more to go until tournament ready in September (September 26th).

Edit: BAH!! I just realized that I have to put the heavy stubber on the Leman Russ. I chose to go with the heavy stubber as opposed to the heavy bolter due to range. I lose 1 strength and ap, but it is meant as anti-infantry and for the most part will be used as such (I dont know of a vehicle off the top of my head that has front armor of 10, but I think I had seen one, but even then it is a glancing hit). Anyways, it is just another thing that I have to do... I will have to see if there is a way that I can pin the stubber in...

We played again this Saturday and I got to fine tune my list a little bit. There are only 5 things that I need left to do to get my army ready for the tournament. I need to order my Tech Priest, I need to get a unit of guardsmen, I need to paint my Tech Priest and the Guardsmen after putting them together, and then paint my Leman Russ. The army I put together was actually quite effective in that it killed quite a few enemies, but it did not score alot of kill points. This was more of a fishing expedition on my part in that I was trying to find out what it was going to be effective against. So just to remind readers of this blog the stipulations of the tournament at this point, the Force Organization Chart looks like this. The compulsory choices are one HQ and one troop choice (as opposed to 1 HQ and 2 troop) and optional forces consist of (I am assuming on the troop choices), 5 troop, 1 elite, 1 heavy, and 1 fast attack (I know for sure at this point on the heavy, elite, and fast attack choice numbers) and a maximum point value of 500 points. So my list consists of:

1 Tech Priest - HQ
1 Infantry Platoon - Troop
-Platoon Command Squad with Vox Caster
-2 Infantry Squads blobbed together
1 Leman Russ
-Lascannon
-Heavy Stubber
1 Valkyrie
-Multiple Rocket Pod
-Pair of Heavy Bolters

So in the first fight, we lost 9 kill points to 2 kill points but we managed to kill off a majority of the figures in their unit, we just failed to kill of the entire unit. It also doesn't help that my partner, while fairly good at picking out units that are effective, is still learning the rules (not that I've learned all the rules. I still get them wrong), but we've got about a month to work on our strategies and I have confidence in my teammate. Anyways, after this game I played 2 games with an Ork player that we practice with. Technically I won both games as I swept him off the board for the first game and in the second game I killed off the only figure that had a power weapon capable of killing off my vehicles (I think, it may have been that he only had a chance of killing it off on a six when assaulting the vehicle if it hit). After killing off that squad, I decided that he could swap the power claw on his big mek in a battlewagon with a kustom force field. After doing that, he swept me off the board, so technically I won, but at the same time I lost. I am not sure if there is anything I can do increase the effectiveness of this army, but now I just have to come up with effective strategies along with my partner so I will try and work with strategies with him. I will probably not post again until Saturday unless I am able to purchase the figures that I need to round out my army for the tournament.

So I did not get to buy the figures I wanted to right now. I was hoping to have my student loan money back by now and after I had paid off my rent until the end of the semester and a chunk of my car loan (along with classes and books of course) I was going to buy a tech priest and a unit of guards men. But unfortunately I have not received it yet even though the school sent me a notice they have direct deposited it.... It has happened before so I'm not too worried, just a little disappointed that I cannot work on them yet. Oh well... I will prob get it either today or Monday (at which case I can order the techpriest from GWs website and buy the guard unit on Thursday (no classes)

Prob. buying a box of generic guardsmen this weekend

Ok, so I'm prob buying a new set of generic guardsman this weekend as special weapons and then to fill in the command squads when I'm not using the the flag bearer, the medic, or the vox-caster (although I see him as a permanent fixture in my army rather than an option at this point with the reroll failed orders). So I'm thinking that I am going to put together at least 5 guys with lasguns to fill in for my command squad. That leaves me 5 guys left, but I'm leary about actually placing any weapons on them. I was going to glue one of each weapon, but the squad can have 5 different weapons, so I was thinking about experimenting with rare earth magnents like a few of my gaming buddies have done. While doing it, I will try and take pictures so that I might be able to write a "how to" on here for others to read. Unfortunately, that means that I have to now paint ALL the different weapons in the box. lol.

Edit: Oh yeah, I should be buying my Techpriest tomorrow, but I think that I will have chi3f paint that one as HQs should have a "masters" touch :)

Next flagbearer finished

So I finished the next flag bearer. I actually used legs from the Valkyrie set (I'm assuming they are for the heavy bolter sponsons, but I forgot to put them on), but i think they work fairly well with this one. I still have to do face detail, but as I've said in previous posts, that may wait until I feel more comfortable with painting faces and detail painting. On a side note, I found out my wife's camera is alot better than I thought it was. It was actually the operator that messed most of the shots up. Due to Internet anonymity laws, he shall remain nameless.....

Now I'm not actually sure which flag goes with the Company Command Squad and which goes with the Platoon Command Squad, which is part of the reason I made both. I honestly believe that either can be used for both the Company and the Platoon Command Squads, but with tournaments I will leave it up to the tournament organized, either way I'm prepared (minus the Techpriest I am going to order tomorrow hopefully).

New small project

So I've decided I am going to put together another standard bearer for my Cadians. This first one I put together was the flag with the skull in the middle while this one is the one with the eagle in the middle. I think its called the Aquilla (sp?) in 40k. I wanted this guy to be like those brave souls who carried the flag injured, so I found an arm that was in a sling to make him look wounded. I think it looks really cool. When I have some time I'll throw up a picture of him. The only problem at this point is I think I am out of legs. I may have some leftover from my Valkyrie, but I'm not sure. This really is not a problem as I stated before I was going to buy another Cadian Guard box by this weekend and use the figures in there to fill out my command squads with normal lasguns (5 of them) and then the remaining guys would be used to add special weapons to my squads in the future since I would not be using them for a full unit of guards. I will try and get a picture up of the new guard that I am working on tommorow.

How I painted my IG Infantry figures

Ok, so how I painted my infantry figures was pretty simple and took very little time. The first to colors that I used was Bleached Bone and Catachan Green.

The Bleached Bone color was used for cloth portion (legs, arms, some areas under the chest armor, and the neck area on the back of the figure) of the figures surface area. The Catachan Green was used for the armor areas (the chest, shoulders, boots gloves, and helmet) of the figures. For the first squad, I put the figures together (based and glued) completely whereas for the second squad I actually painted them on the sprue. If I were to recommend how to paint to a newbie, I would suggest painting them on the sprue and then touching them up before putting them together. The gun I just used Chaos Black with a liberal dry brushing of Chainmail or Boltgun Metal.

The biggest hint I can give a new painter at this point is within reason, do not try too hard to detail paint your figure. While I did make sure that a majority of the areas were painted with my correct colors, if there were small areas of crossover (such as the Bleached Bone accidently getting painted a little on the Catachan Green) I would not worry about it that much.

After that all dried, I gave my figures a washing with Devlan Mud in the areas that had the Bleached Bone to give it the desert camo look that current camouflage.

To paint the faces (I have not done detail painting yet) all I did was paint the faces with Tallarn Flesh.

Eventually (by the end of this month) I will buy another unit of guards so that I can make another command squad with the bits that I have left over from the original command squad I purchased (about 5 figures) and then use the remaining figures for special weapons for veteran squads.

This will be my next projects and as I go I will be taking pictures but I will prob not upload them until the tank is finished. I actually have 3 of these from an Apoc Leman Russ Squadron Box set. Hopefully this will be as easy as the Valkyrie was. Base painting the vehicle sucked (just because there is so much surface area to paint green, not because it is hard) because they (Games-Workshop) does not make all the colors of paints in a spray form and at this point I do not have a airbrush. I think what I am going to do is see if I can find a green that is comparable to Catachan Green (or at least fairly close) such as Lowe's Satin Hunter Green by Valspar. I've worked at Lowe's for about 14 years now (the 22nd of August will be my 14th year there) and know that Valspar is a good quality of paint, but I am anxious to see how their spray paint works on plastic. This should be a good time to try it as long as the colors are not too far off.

Ok, so this is squad number 2 out of my limited number of Guard (at this point). It was painted the same way that squad 1 was painted but with a little less care. What I mean by this is that I did not spend as much time detail painting the main colors (Bleached Bone and Catachan Green), but I did spend time doing the access colors.

I think they turned out good considering my level of skill when it comes to painting. A little bit later I will write about how I painted them and some advice for newer painters.

500 point tournament sometime in September

So my buddies and I are getting ready for a partner tournament at Adventure's Underground (local used book and hobby shop) and I got to test out my IG version 1.0 on Saturday August 22nd. While we did not get completely run off the table (my IG did, but my son's Space Marines did not) we lost fairly badly. I think that was in part to my army makeup. The tournament calls for at a minimum of 1 HG and 1 Troop choice and your army can only have 1 Fast Attack, 1 Heavy Support and 1 Elite and for my 500 points I had:

1 Techpriest
1 Infantry Platoon made up of
-Platoon Command Squad (with Vox-Caster)
-2 Infantry Squads blobbed up (with one Vox-Caster)
2 Leman Russ tanks in a squadron

My idea at first was to have the tanks on the bottom corner of the board as to be able to give my guardsman cover saves, but decided against it when I got to thinking about falling back and did not want my blob of guard to be run off the table. Unfortunately for me, my opponent got his stinging scorpions in on the second turn and promptly destroyed my tanks because they were a squadron... count my lesson learned.... Dont leave figures on the side of the board where they can be gotten by outflank... It was fairly academic after that as the majority of my points were tied up in the Leman Russes, so I think I am going to mix it up next time when I use my Valkyrie instead of 2 Russes. Even though I got swept out, my son did a great job holding off both armies even though we did not win. His Space Marine Captain got some lucky rolls and was able to hold off the stinging scorpions and his Space Marines were able to hold off (even though they eventually died the last turn) so that he did not get swept off. All in all I call it a win for my son even though we lost.

Things learned for next time: Only use one Russ and find another figure to replace it. Possibly the Valkyrie so that I can fly the Techpriest around to fix the Russ or Valkyrie, or to fly the platoon command squad around so that they can issue orders to the other squads that are within 6". I'll post how the battle goes this weekend.

So here is my completed Valkyrie that I just finished painting. I still have the cockpit to glue on, but other than that, it is pretty much finished. I am sure that there is more that I can do, but as a novice painter for now it is finished though. I have the base painted, but it seems pretty vanilla right now. The only thing I have left that I *WANT* to do to the Valkyrie is to paint teeth on it, much like the WW2 bombers. One of my buddies (chi3f) said he would do it so I'm excited. I would also like to have him put a picture of the "pinup girls" somewhere on the vehicle.

My next project is going to be painting at least one Leman Russ tank for my army so that it can be ready for a 500 point army at Adventures Underground in September. I will post pictures when it is finished showing it from start to finish (it is already put together so it wont be from sprue to painted, but I'm sure it will be fun.

So here is my blog, its going to be about Warhammer 40k painting (or rather attempting to) and in small parts strategies that I've found to work for IG. If I were to describe my fascination with Warhammer it would be because of the rules. While Games-Workshop has some fairly ambiguous rules, it is a fairly structured game and I love discussing (thats what we call it after our heated debates) the game and rules. One of the things I hate is looking up "I win" strategies on any website as I love trying to come up with them on my own.

So how new am I at this game? I started playing Warhammer 40k in June (I think it was June) right after WSU ended its Spring semester. I started out with Tyranid, but got frustraited with them so they have sat in a Reaper foam case not getting played or painted. I then spoke with one of my buddies who was willing to sell me his Sisters of Battle/Witch Hunters army. After agreeing to that, I noticed the Imperial Guard and that they could still use the Sisters in the battle. I then realized that I would like the Guard because they are the normal Joe Schmoes of the Warhammer world. I have been painting them with much more enthusiasm than I did with the Tyranid.

So WSU starts on the 24th of this month and I'm getting a little stressed as I wont be able to devote as much to 40k as I want. I'm excited that I am going to get my student loans soon and so I will get to pay off several bills (apartment and car) for several months and which means that I will be able to buy a couple of Imperial Guard Battle forces later in the month with the money that we will be saving. Anyways, I will get to posting some other stuff in a bit.
